Viking Wrestling Club

2010-2011

What is the Purpose of the viking Wrestling Club?

The Viking Wrestling club was founded to give young wrestlers the chance to learn the basics of the sport of wrestling, gain athletic confidence, become excited about the sport of wrestling, and carry this knowledge, confidence and excitement on to the next level.

Who may join the club?

The Viking Wrestling club is open to all boys and girls who are eight years old (or in third grade) through seventh graders.

How much does it cost?

The 2008-2009 club fees are $125.  Wrestlers must also join USA Wrestling; this costs $35.  In addition, there is a $15 fee for every tournament entered. Siblings are buy one, get the second 50% off.

What can my wrestler do during the off-Season/outside of Practice?

There are two local wrestling facilities:  The Wrestling Academy and The Wrestling Center.  Both have excellent facilities and instructors. If you are interested in exercise programs at home, I strongly recommend the Crossfit Kids website.  Their program is excellent for young ones.

How do I sign my wrestler up?

Simply complete the packet of information in the Parent Packet and come to the Informational Meeting.

Where should I go for any other questions?

The Parent Information Packet Answers almost every question you can think of.  If anything else comes up, feel free to contact head coach, joe winterscheidt via email.

what gear will we need?

athletic shorts, water bottle, tee shirt and wrestling shoes.

Is my son/daughter going to be cutting weight?

No.  At this level, athletes are not encouraged in any way to lose weight.  They are strongly encouraged to eat a healthy diet.  But they should eat what is appropriate for their age and weight.

How can I keep my son/daughter from catching skin diseases?

Athletes should shower immediately after every practice and tournament.  Athletes should cover any open wounds before stepping on to the mat.  No athlete should practice or compete with a contagious skin condition, and the coach should be notified immediately.  Finally, it is recommended that Kenshield (available from the coach) should be applied before tournaments.

How many tournaments/meets should my son/daughter attend?

All of them.  Unless there is a specific conflict with a family or school event, we expect to see the entire team at all wrestling events.  This is to help give athletes the most experience and improve the team spirit.  We have scheduled 3 beginners and 3 regular tournaments to give variety to the schedule.

I have a girl.  Can she wrestle?

Absolutely.  Girls are encouraged to wrestle.  Girls’ wrestling is growing tremendously in the state and across the country. There are many opportunities at the high school and college level for female wrestlers.  Now, girls can also wrestle at the club level.

How strenuous are practices going to be for my son/daughter?

We try to make practices as challenging as possible to push the limits of the athletes.  However, practices are focused on the gaining of wrestling skills and not physical conditioning.  Athletes should expect to work hard for the duration of the practice.

How can parents help support the team?

We are looking for parents to help out with a number of supporting activities.  Coordinating transportation to meets and tournaments, organizing team photos, and planning the end of the year party.  Also, please keep encouraging your wrestler and provide a positive atmosphere for them, as it can be a difficult sport for first timers to pick up quickly.

How can injuries be prevented?

We will work hard to promote flexibility and warm-up the muscles before practicing and competing.  Injuries can also be prevented by wearing proper attire and paying close attention to instruction.
